Summer Be Damned, Pumpkin Spice Lattes Are Coming Soon(er)

Oppressive heat can’t keep PSLs at bay

This summer’s oppressive heat has set all-time temperature records across the country. It is currently 100 degrees in Texas. Wildfires are raging in California. But never mind all that. There is one thing that waits for no man — and it sure as hell won’t wait for more appropriate weather. Yes, pumpkin spice lattes are almost here.

Last year, Starbucks released its version of the infamous beverage on September 8, making it available to those with a “secret password” prior to its official launch date. This year, McDonald’s is determined to beat Starbucks to the punch: It will begin serving its own McCafe Pumpkin Spice Latte in all 14,000-plus restaurants nationwide beginning August 31. This marks the first time in three years that the sugary coffee concoction will be rolled out at all stores — great news, considering Miami temperatures are expected to reach a chilly 87 degrees that day.

Pumpkin spice is no longer relegated to coffee drinks, of course. These days, you can find it just about anywhere — even in August. Cheerios will begin offering its gluten-free, “made from real pumpkin puree” iteration this month, and English muffin purveyor Thomas’ will hawk pumpkin spice English muffins and bagels starting in September.

But despite what the pumpkin-spice-shilling food industry seems to think, studies have shown that consumers’ appetites for the stuff aren’t all that big. In fact, a 2015 study by NPD Group found that most people are content with having just one pumpkin spice latte per season.
