Burger King's Whopper Burrito Is Really Happening

It launches nationwide August 15

Like it or not, the insane success of the Cronut means a never-ending procession of hybrid foods will be unleashed upon the Earth until the day a giant meteor finally ends it all. Case in point: Burger King has decided to take its Whopper burrito nationwide.

The Whopperito was introduced as a test item at a handful of stores back in June; according to Bloomberg, it rolls out nationally August 15. As its name indicates, the Whopperito is basically a Whopper shoved inside a tortilla, and appears to contain beef, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions. Thankfully, the benevolent people of Burger King have spared us from eating tortillas slathered in ketchup, mustard, and/or mayo: the only condiment on this beast is queso sauce.

Bloomberg says this burger-burrito is BK's way of "taking a stab at Chipotle," but surely no self-respecting person with a craving for barbacoa and guacamole would settle for a chopped-up burger patty and pickles rolled inside a tortilla — E. coli fears be damned.

The Whopperito is $2.99 and will only be available "for three to four months." Will Chipotle's attempt at burgers taste better than Burger King's foray into burritos? Stay tuned: The first location of Chipotle's burger concept, Tasty Made, opens this fall in Lancaster, Ohio.
