Crowdfunded Coffeemaker Promises Cold Brew in 10 Minutes

It’ll retail for $299

The promise of cold brew coffee in 10 minutes or less is apparently an enticing one: Prisma, an at-home coffeemaker that aims to do just that, has raised more than $57,000 via its Indiegogo campaign that just launched Monday.

Cold brew’s popularity has exploded in recent months, with even Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts joining the fray. The demand has become so high, in fact, that some say it’s one reason the price of coffee is on the rise.

While traditional cold brew takes 12 or more hours to make, Prisma aims to streamline that process through its “specialized vacuum infusion process.” In less than 10 minutes, cold brew automatically drains into the carafe. The device is expected to retail for $299 when it hits the market in September 2017.

Here’s a closer look at how it works:

The first Prismas are slated to ship in September 2017. The device is a product of GE Appliances’ FirstBuild, a Louisville, Kentucky-based lab that produces small batches of high-tech products. It’s just one of many high-tech devices aiming to up the coffee game: others include coffeemaker-alarm clock hybrids and coffee presses that fit in the palm of your hand.
