'Documentary Now!' returns to IFC in September
One of the best films to captivate the food world in recent years has been Jiro Dreams of Sushi. The documentary, which follows 85-year old sushi chef Jiro Ono of Tokyo's three Michelin starred Sukiyabashi Jiro on his relentless quest for perfection, won rave reviews from both critics and audiences — so naturally, it's ripe for parody.
Portlandia star Fred Armisen will pay homage to Jiro in the next season of Documentary Now!, the Emmy-nominated IFC mockumentary series that "lovingly pays homage to the world of documentaries." (Bill Hader co-stars, and created the series along with Armisen and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Seth Meyers.)

Shot in Colombia, "Juan likes Rice and Chicken" is a colorful food-centric homage to the 2011 documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi." Young chef Arturo (Armisen) and his brother learn the tricks of the trade from their stern, no-nonsense father Juan who runs a highly-acclaimed restaurant that only serves one dish made with painstaking precision — chicken and buttered rice. Who wouldn’t travel thousands of miles for the world’s best plate of rice?
Previous episodes have been inspired by documentaries from Nanook of the North to Grey Gardens; a particularly hilarious episode parodied Vice's investigative series on HBO.
The new season of Documentary Now! premieres Wednesday, September 14 at 10 p.m. on IFC.
