The Smithsonian Is Hiring a Craft Beer Scholar

Want to get paid $64,000 a year to drink craft beer all day? The Smithsonian is on the hunt for a professional beer geek, reports the Washington City Paper.

According to the job ad, the museum is "seeking a professional historian / scholar to conduct archival and field research for a new initiative on American brewing history, with special emphasis on the craft industry." The three-year appointment is being funded by the Brewers Association as part of the Smithsonian Food History project.

"We have collected food history for many years, so when we were doing the research for the exhibition, which is all about big changes in the post WW II era in how and what we eat, one thing we were curious about is the craft beer movement," curator Paula Johnson tells the City Paper.

Of course, the job will be much more than just sipping IPAs: The beer historian "will be working to expand the museum's collections, including artifacts such as archival documents, business records, branding and logo development, label sketches, [and] brewery floor plans," says WJLA, and that will involve traveling across the country.

Sadly, applicants will need more than just an Untappd account and a beer belly to qualify: "Candidates with an advanced degree in American business, brewing, food, cultural, or similar specialization within history are encouraged to apply," according to the ad.
